How To Describe Blood In Writing

I've been trying to research this, but I've been coming upwardly dry and I desire to write this without it beingness tacky or unrealistic.

Background: Main character is waking upwards from unconsciousness. They took a pretty skillful whack to the caput and I already accept all the black, spinning, nausea, encephalon fog worked out. during the time they were KO, one of their assailants kicked them in the ribs several times basically merely to be a wiggle.

That beingness said, is it plausible to regain consciousness and immediately showtime coughing claret? I've heard that might exist a little too much injury though (punctured lung?). Go on in mind where the MC is beingness held, there'southward hostiles nearby and NO medical attention to exist had. Can you cough up blood in that situation without having something as astringent as a punctured lung or something else you lot would demand to seek immediate medical attention for otherwise death would be certain?

Reasons for coughing upward blood subsequently fight could be as follows: Swallowing blood whilst KO'd, either from a bitten tongue or other mouth injury; Internal haemorrhage of the stomach... That'southward all I've got.

Y'all won't have an effect doing this. You can cough up blood without dire need for medical attention. This could be a wound from many source points like the nose, mouth, throat, stomach or chest areas. Wait at it like this, if yous wanted to brand yourself sick and put your fingers into your pharynx to practice information technology and cutting your throat with a fingernail you wouldn't need rushing to hospital, as information technology would be a pocket-size cut and would jell and heal. On a similar level someone being kicked while on the ground may notice blood when they urinate as well, merely non be in danger of dying – though of course they could be. :)

You wouldn't want to write that they are coughing up lots of claret, or night blood either, simply nix incorrect with them coughing up some blood without beingness in need of emergency medical care.

Is "coughing up" the discussion I'd want to use here? Or would something else be more favorable like "spitting upwardly" or "coughed a few times, spitting out claret"?

I've coughed upward claret earlier just from having a horrible chest cold. It wasn't much and I was but fine without medical attention. While I don't know much on the subject there are clearly cases where it'southward not as big of a deal equally information technology seems. Possibly practice a symptom check on a site like webmd? They would accept a list of potential causes for an disquiet and that would definitely give you more info!

I call up it'd be safer going with "spitting out" blood, presuming he'southward cut a lip or his nose has been bleeding. Coughing it up seems to propose that the source is internal. Then once again, I'm medically ignorant.

Coughing up blood is fine term if they are doing that, and spitting blood is really them simply spitting out whatever is their mouth.

What exercise you await when you lookk on a website? Coughing up blood is fine, put your feet up and lookout TV? That would just open them upwardly to a lawsuit I'thou certain with whatever advise other than seek medical help. I'grand not saying that's wrong advice at all, but only saying that while coughing up blood could be a sign of serious trouble it doesn't accept to be.

In brusque if you want your grapheme to cough upwardly blood and be sore in ribs or other areas its fine. Heck, fifty-fifty make him worry he has serious internal injury and add some drama to your story, it beats he spat out some claret and moves on. You won't have doctors phoning you up saying your story is rubbish and that he would accept died. :)
